I've just received this email from Lindsay Reade about the sad state of affairs regarding Martin Hannett's last resting place.

I think this is something we can help with through individual donations and I'll be very interested to hear from anyone who wishes to make a contribution.

Hi Marko

I was visiting Tony’s grave in Southern Cemetery yesterday and decided to call in on Martin and Rob (especially since they were part of the reason Tony chose to be buried there).  I had to get help from the office for location but found them both – and was horrified to discover that Martin Hannett – this genius and legend of our time – is lying in a totally unmarked grave (actually there was an empty plastic bottle of lemonade on it which I removed).  It is well known that Martin had no money when he died, neither did his wife and he had waived his royalty rights when he settled his legal case with Factory.
I cannot let this state of affairs remain.  So much money has been made thanks to him!!
I would like to start a fund and wondered if you could help through your website?  (I think engraved headstones probably cost in the region of £1,000).  There must be some quite wealthy fans out there who might want to contribute?

Best wishes Lindsay Reade

Just a thought, but have any of the people who partially owe their careers & wealth to the man been approached to contribute?

Hi Kiltman

I received Lindsay's email earlier today and have published the info as requested. She only found out about this yesterday so it's all at a very early stage - but yes, I'm pretty sure they will be contacted.

As it is at an early stage I don't know how any monies will be collected but I anticipate Lindsay will set up an account.

How much should we contribute?

If 50 of us pay just a tenner then we're halfway there

Yes indeed, count me in for sure. This has really made me very sad. What a world we live in, when some one who has contributed so much to our musical and cultural heritage, so much to the lives of every one of us on these pages and way,way beyond, some one who's legacy is global, could die almost penniless, and rest in what appears to be a paupers grave. It is awful.

If the story itself didn't prise my wallet open then that last post certainly did. Count me in.

and doesn't this speak volumes about this wonderful business we know as the music industry, those hawks who pick at the bones, who squeeze the very life blood from it's talent, then turn their backs just as ferociously when they're no longer of any use to them, alive.

Any profits from the 'Martin Hannett Mixes' Cd heading in this direction? surely that should have been the original intent for releasing such an item, a bit of extra (any) thought could have made that a marketing exercise as I'm sure they would have shifted more units - and still made a profit after contributing to Martin's resting place, still, they're not alone on this one.

Probably half an hour's bank interest to certain Hannett affiliated rock stars.

I'd be in for a tenner.

Someone should post the e mail on a U2 forum.

Maybe Bonio (sorry meant Bongo) will hear about it and will contribute.

Paypal or an address to send a cheque will be fine for me.

We are all assuming that he would have approved of a Christian burial, aren't we? If that is what he wanted, then OK.

Well he's already in what is generally assumed to be a Christian burial ground, but there's no need for a cross of any type. A 12"-single-type stone would look corny, but I hope whatever is used it isn't gushy or tasteless.

It's been about 24 Hours since I put the message on the site and things are moving quite quickly.

It's wonderful to see that people want to contribute and, as Lindsay pointed out in an email to me, it seems a suitable tribute for fans to pay for a memorial as they are likely to want to visit and pay their respects.

I also like the idea of a lot of people each contributing a small amount to achieve this rather than a rich rock star writing one cheque. People drawing together as a community.

To give you an update of where we are at the moment:

Lindsay is going to check with Martin's wife that she feels this is an appropriate gesture and that she wants it to be taken forward.

Providing she is in agreement we will then have to assess the cost before collecting any money. It's important that we don't collect too much as money donated for a specific cause, quite correctly, can't be used for something else.

Many thanks to Moist who has taken advice on the legal and tax situation with charitable donations of this kind. We now have a very good idea of what we have to do.

Thanks to everyone who has offered to donate some money and for those of you who have come forward with offers of assistance in other forms. It really is good to see everyone pulling together to right something that seems to be so wrong.

If you would like to donate please feel free to leave a message here and I'll contact you at the appropriate time. We appreciate that many of you will want to donate via PayPal and we will endeavor to set that up.

I have read the New Order On Line thread.

I'm still happy to throw my tenner into the pot.

I have to say I am very pleased with the positive response on this messageboard.

No doubt there are a whole range of opinions about this and people have been sensitive enough not to post negative contributions. Thanks for that

I think it's now clear we can raise enough money if, and it's a big if, that's what Martin's family want.

Lindsay is getting in touch with them and we will take things forward, if appropriate, when we know how they feel about the whole thing.

I set this thread up to provide information about this matter and to see what the response would be. The response has been good and we now need to see what the family say. So I'm going to lock this thread until I can post another update - hopefully in a couple of days time.

Thanks to you all

Marko
